Stapleford Tawney – Arthur William Starling [SS/6937]

[SS/6937] Able Seaman ‘HMS Raglan’33, Royal Navy. He was killed on the 20th January 1918. His body was not recovered, and he is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
He was born34 2nd October 1897, at Tawney Common, Stapleford Tawney, the son of Benjamin and Mary Ann Starling.
He enlisted on the 26th January 1916 His occupation at the time he enlisted is given as a Barman. He was posted to HMS Raglan on the 22nd October 1917.
His brother Albert Starling also fell.

HMS Raglan sailed for the Dardanelles in June 1915. On 20 January 1918, she and other members of the
Detached Squadron of the Aegean Squadron were attacked by the Turkish battlecruiser Yavuz Sultan Selim
(formerly German battlecruiser SMS Goeben), the light cruiser Midilli (formerly German light cruiser SMS
Breslau) and four destroyers. Raglan was sunk with the loss of 127 lives.
