Stanford Rivers by H. M. Scott

This history of the Manors of Stanford Rivers, Traceys and Bellhouse
illustrates very clearly the deep roots of both Stanford Rivers Church
and Parish. It is worth remembering that "Stanford" goes right back
to Anglo-Saxon times, and when we add "Rivers" we go way back to
the days of King John.

In this book we catch a glimpse of Stanford Rivers' past; its connection
with the Royal House and the History of England. The Benefice is today
under Royal Patronage. It has always been so since the days when the
Sovereign lodged in the Parish whilst hunting in Epping Forest. Some
say Elizabeth I could have worshipped in St. Margaret's Church. No
doubt Oliver Cromwell passed through on his way to Felstead, and
certainly David Livingstone had reason to remember his visit to
Stanford Rivers.

The Parish is indeed fortunate to have a Lord of the Manor with a
sense of history and an appreciation of bygone days. We are indebted
to our esteemed friend Harold Scott for compiling this interesting
and detailed account of past events, and for his continuing concern
and support for all that takes place in the Village in the present.
He has spent many hours, expended much effort and exercised a great
deal of patience in accumulating the material for this book. In the
process, his kind and generous disposition has naturally won for him,
and for his dear wife Joan, many good friends in Essex and in other
parts of the world.

In these times of change and movement of population it is good to
have such a book as this, and to be reminded of the long history
which has shaped so much of our present life.

December, 1973.
