Footnote

140 In consequence of the plea that dissenters were becoming too formidable in numbers to be suppressed, or left out of consideration in matters ecclesiastical, the primate (Archbp. Sheldon) in 1676 addressed a letter to the bishop of London, asking him to obtain through his Archdeacons from the ministers and churchwardens of each parish, information as to the following points:

  1. The number of families or persons inhabiting each parish.
  2. The number of popish recusants, or such as are suspected of recusancy, there are among the inhabitants.
  3. The number of other dissenters resident in such parishes which either obstinately refuse or wholly absent themselves from the communion of the Church of England.
