A Personal Recollection of Stanford Rivers

I would like to add a little piece of my knowledge about Stanford Rivers, as I recall. My father Alexander Cameron (my name is Peter - one of his four sons) was stationed there in the 1920' I can recall Pc Gutteridge on many occasions visiting us in the bungalow prior to his murder in 1927 by Brown and Kennedy.

I was baptised in the church with my brother in 1926. I can remember the village shop and post office opposite a row of cottages. Also I can recall the night that the chapel was burned down - we had been to a meeting just before it started.

In 1940-1941 I was in a Searchlight regiment on a site behind the church. We used to do a "lot of business" with the farmer. Onc of our other occupations on our off duty moments was a trip to the White Bear or Woodman pubs.

We were part of the air defence of North Weald aerodrome. There were many air raids and several near misses which landed very close to us.

I made many friends and I wonder if any of them remember me. I would like to hear from them if they do.

Peter Cameron

Source Notes:
