Alleged Assault by a Gamekeeper

On Tuesday week James Edwards, a marine, store dealer, of Stanford Rivers, was walking with a young woman through a field in the occupation of Mr. Mumford. A party of gentlemen were shooting over the land at the time, and as there was no foot-path or right of way across this particular field, David Worskett, gamekeeper to Mr. Christy, asked him what business he had there. Edwards replied that he had permission from Mr. Mumford; high words ensued, and eventually Edwards struck Worskett, who responded by striking his assailant on the bead with such force that he felled him to the ground and inflicted a severe scalp wound. Edwards them made his way to Ongar and reached the police station in a very pitiable and exhausted condition, his clothes being saturated with blood. Inspector Robinson took him to the surgery of Dr. Grattan. where his wound was dressed, and he has now pretty well restored from the effects of the encounter.
