Did You Know?

A question. Which way does the Queen face on British coins and on stamps? The answer is that Queen Elizabeth faces right on coins, but left on stamps. Which way will Prince Charles face when he becomes King?

It was established in the early 1600’s, that the direction of the Monarch would alternate on coins during each rule. The Queen’s father George VI faced left on his coins. To apply this to the present day, this secret tradition being in place will mean the Queen’s next successor will face to the left on coins and will look onwards to their right on stamps.

The only exception is Edward VIII who broke with tradition as he preferred his left side.

All the coins in the United Kingdom have a picture of the Queen on one side but did you know that this portrait has changed five times during her 70 year reign.
