Lost and Found: Edward Smyth, the Boy on the Tomb

Edward Smyth – The Stolen Statue at Theydon Mount Church

In January 2011, Anne Padfield reported that the statue of Edward Smyth, the boy on the tomb at Theydon Mount Church, had been stolen together with the salamander at his father's feet.2

The Group did not formally report that it had subsequently been found.

In St Michael's Church, Theydon Mount: A History and Guide, released to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the rebuilding and reopening of the church, Anne Padfield wrote:

"Almost miraculously, 18 months or so later, the statue and salamander were offered to Christie's, recognised, and eventually returned."
