Remembering those from the High Country who gave their lives during the First World War

In 2014, to coincide with the centenary of the beginning of the Great War,
the late Martyn Lockwood sent me a copy of what, I believe, was intended to
become a book to commemorate those who died from Greensted, Stanford Rivers,
Stapleford Tawney and Theydon Mount.

To my knowledge, this was never published as a complete document, and it is
only when looking for old Word documents that it came to light on my laptop.

Martyn was always interested in the events of the war and often wrote about
or spoke on this topic. His dedication to remembering these people can be seen
in what may have been an incomplete work, because Martyn was always on the
lookout for more photographs or information.

Being a local historian can be addictive!

The High Country History Group was active in 2014 and 2018 when the centenary
of events during the First World War was remembered.

It seems fitting to circulate this now among our members and to publish this
on our website as a tribute to Martyn but, as he would say too, a lasting
tribute to the people from our rural Essex villages.
