The memorial in the church records the name as Ernest S. Doe.
However, no corresponding record has been found for a man of that name who
was killed during the war. There is, however, a record for a
Stephen Doe, as detailed below.
[5916] Private in the East Surrey Regiment. He enlisted at
Warley and was killed in action on 6 March 1916, aged 34. He has no known
grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas-de-Calais,
France.
He was born at Stapleford Tawney on 1 March 1882. His brother was
D. J. Doe, of Clatterford End, Toot Hill.
The 1911 Census records an Ernest Doe, aged 29, living with
his widowed mother and two brothers at Wheelers Yard, Stanford Rivers.
His place of birth is given as Stapleford Tawney.
