He enlisted at Warley. He was killed on 14 October 1916.
He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the
Thiepval Memorial, France.
He was born on 17 November 1895 in Stapleford Tawney, the son of
George and Emily Hartgrove, of Colliers Hatch, Tawney Common.
At the time of the 1911 Census, he was shown as a lodger living at
Colliers Hatch, Tawney Common. His age was recorded as 12.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records his age at death as 21.

Cpl. Hartgrove, Essex Regt., eldest son of Mr and Mrs Geo. Hartgrove,
of Tawney Common, was killed by a piece of shell during a bombardment
on Oct. 14. He had been at the Front a year and four months, and was
21 years of age.
