He joined on 8 June 1916, aged 29 years and 9 months. He gave his address as
Lilac Cottage, Coopersale, and his occupation as “Munitions”.
Following home leave, he was sent to East Africa on 30 April 1917.
He died of influenza on 3 December 1918, aged 29, and is buried in
Dar es Salaam (Upanga Road) Cemetery, Tanzania.
He was born on 7 September 1887 at Stapleford Tawney, the son of
Thomas and Fanny Stubbings, of Crumps Farm, Stapleford Tawney.
He was married to Irene Margaret Stubbings (née Hall). They were married at
St Mary’s Church, Stapleford Tawney, on 26 December 1914.
They had two children:
- Robert Cecil, born 1915
- Walter Thomas, born 1917
His name appears on the war memorial in Theydon Garnon Church.
He was entitled to the British War Medal and the
Victory Medal.
Letter dated 19 February 1934
A letter from the Royal Army Service Corps Regimental Association requested
particulars of Private Stubbings’ service, as one of his sons had applied to
the Association for assistance.
